Decorate sugar cookies before or after baking. If cookies need to be flattened before baking use the bottom of a drinking glass a fork or your thumb. Once the icing has set these cookies are great for gifting or for sending. Beat the butter and sugar on medium high speed until the sugar is dissolved and creamy.
Enjoy cookies right away or wait until the icing sets to serve them. So place the cooled cookies back on baking sheets. This will help the sprinkles stick and won t change the finished appearance of the cookie when you re done baking.
To help the sugar stick before baking brush each cookie with beaten egg white with a pastry brush top with a light coating of sugar and bake. Put decorative sugar in a small bowl one bowl per color. For this technique we recommend you use decorative sugar also known as colored sanding sugar turbinado sugar coarse golden sugar or pearl sugar coarse clear.
If you are making old fashioned sugar cookies like the ones here you can make your dough and form the cookies. Add baking soda milk vanilla and egg to the butter. Do not put anything on your cookies before baking.
Put it on before you bake. Beat until all ingredients are well incorporated. If you want to add colored sugar to the cookies then after the cookies are baked and fully cooled spread either royal icing or edible baking glue to the tops then dip them in sugar.
The easiest thing to do is to brush the tops of the cookies with a little bit of water or milk using just enough to dampen the cookie dough and no more. If you decorate cookies with royal icing always allow the cookies to completely cool before decorating preferably overnight so the icing doesn t run because of the internal heat the cookies still hold. Use this method to decorate cookies before baking.
